The L-Plate Kitchen Course Information

The L-Plate kitchen is a 4 part course that will give your teen life skills beyond the kitchen. The benefits of knowing how to cook are infinite and well researched. Your teen will be more confident, self reliant, a better problem solver, make better choices, be better with money, be healthier and have better relationships.
The reason we call this course ‘The L-Plate Kitchen’ is because it’s going to take some guidance, organisation and support to pass on these skills. Like any new skill we pass on to our children – it takes time, patience and structure – just like learning to drive.
This 4 part course is a positive way to create good habits, get organised and pass on skills and recipes in a safe, practical and fun way. We want your teen to not only know how to cook – but how to cook intuitively, how to plan ahead, and how to avoid costly, processed foods.
But before we let them loose in the kitchen or release them into the big world – we need to show them how to plan, prep, cook (and clean as you go) and importantly, to enjoy the process.

MORE ABOUT THE COURSE
The in-person course (for 12-16 year olds) will be held in 4 parts over 8 weeks.
BEFORE the first class :
An online catchup with your coaches and your cohort. We will cover:
- Meal Planning – tailor made for your unique household. Accommodating busy schedules, different tastes, seasons)
- How being a bit more organised relieves stress, saves you money and helps you delegate
- Setting your household and your teen up for success
- Expectation – what you’ll need, ‘home’ work, tips and resources.
This session will take about 40 minutes and if you’d like to stay a little longer we can answer any questions or help you get set up for the course.

Encouraging your teen to take some responsibility for their breakfasts and snacks, is an effective way to get teens involved in meal planning and cooking.
We have developed flexible, easy, recipes that can be prepped beforehand to create calmer mornings and well nourished teens.
We will also include lessons on kitchen safety, food storage, basic toolkit and benefits of planning ahead.

Over the next fortnight we set your teen up to start contributing to one mid week meal a week. This builds skills, knowledge and kitchen confidence. It also creates connection and a sense of contribution. We are sharing some of our family favourites – recipes that don’t really need a lot of measuring, weighing or skill – but taste fantastic and make excellent LOLs – Left Over Lunches.
·
Using newfound skills of planning and delegating, your teen will help create a full week’s meal plan and delegate who’s doing what.
You can repeat this process again over the fortnight. It’s about developing good habits, keeping it simple, creating space for communication and developing a feel for budgeting – using leftovers and repetition.
·
Recognising new skills, embedding habits and repeating processes – makes more room to be together not just around the table but in the kitchen – planning, prepping and cleaning up together.
This final part of the course focuses on all the positive things that are created when we work together. This week your teen will focus on making your family's favourite Take Away.
We share some of our family favourites – and also encourage your teen to explore other recipe sources – and how to tackle them.
